Gradual introduction to Arduino Project

It may be important to create a couple of simple assignments with problems that might be common to all the team projects in order to ensure that:

1. Their system is set up correctly -- hardware, software, communication, etc. A "hello world" assignment as  glowing of an LED on Arduino.
2. They gain some confidence in programming and seeing their hardware interact with the world before they are ready for bigger challenges.

Questions: Clearly, "hello world" is one assignment. What should be others?

Arduino Microcontroller resources

The Arduino microcontroller is used by students in ME2011 to control a robot. It is an open-source, small, single-board computer with analog and digital inputs and outputs. The programming language is a simple version of C. Code is developed on a personal computer (Windows/Mac/Linux) and downloaded to the board through a USB channel.

Based on above, one idea is to ask students to build a mobile robot platform with legs (many legs as in a spider or two legs as in human beings or four legs) that is controlled and driven by Arduino. The projects will differ from each other in the robot design.

These Arduino sketches put your BYFR through its paces. Be sure to download the correct one for the version of Arduino IDE software you are using. These are zip archive files, and must be unpacked to your Arduino sketchbook folder before use.
  • Demo sketch for Arduino 1.0 - Download and install this if you have Arduino 1.0. See the readme file for additional information.
  • Demo sketch for Arduino pre-release - Download and install this if you have a pre-release version of Arduino (must be 0022 or later). See the readme file for additional information.
  • Servos-only robot exerciser - Run just the servo motors on your BYFR. All other code (switches, infrared remote control, sound) is removed. Good for checking proper connection of your servos. The sketch repeats a basic motion pattern -- forward, back, right, left -- over and over again. Compatible with both Arduino 1.0 and pre-release versions.
  • IR remote test (for Arduino pre-release) - Test the functionality of the infrared remote control. Download this zip file if you are using Arduino pre-release software. See the readme file for additional information.

Description: The Magician Chassis is our latest robot platform from Dagu. It features two gearmotors with 65mm wheels and a rear caster. The chassis plates are cut from acrylic with a wide variety of mounting holes for sensors, controllers, power, etc. Simply bolt the two pre-cut platforms together, attach the motors and caster and add your favorite robotics controller. 1. Sumo Robot
        Each group design their own standard size sumo robot, and to do a sumo game.

2.Dancing Robot
      Each group designs a robot which could use several bar linkages concepts to make the robot to do the specific movements, like dancing.

3. Shooting Robot
       Basketball shooting robot, 9 baskets in a square each group have to shoot. 12 balls, to see how many they can hit!!

      It’s like basketball shooter, design a mechanism which could shoot the paper airplane out, and they can compete the distance they can fly.
